XXS Dog Clothes

XXS Dog Clothes, from Toy Dog Clothing to Teacup Dog Clothes – What’s the Big Deal?

(Written by JMH)

Finding toy dog clothing can be a little more difficult to come by than buying for normal sized dogs.  Unlike large breed dog clothes, finding the teacup dog clothes tends to be a bit more boutique.

You ought to be able to find what you need right here at Amazon for cool dog clothes.

This may be due to a number of factors, not the least of which is the constant breeding that’s going on, much to the AKC’s chagrin.  XXS dog clothes typically fit smaller dogs than would naturally be here, by all accounts. That is to say, the breeders have produced dogs that are ill-adapted to the climates they find themselves in, and that’s not meant as a “dig,” just a fact of the matter. It’s also a fact that owning a dog carries with it some pretty hefty responsibilities.

Vets and pet enthusiasts everywhere are agreed: giving specialized teacup dog clothes to your dog is a great way to love them. The XXS dog clothes are made to make your extra small dog feel the most comfy. Clothes manufacturers use only the most carefully selected materials to address the climate. Often fleece, which wicks moisture away and insulates well, is used, as is nylon and cotton.

Toy dog clothing is used for what are typically called “toy dogs” (obviously) – these are dogs bred for their size and other traits. These little breeds of dog have a difficult time maintaining their heat, due to the fact they’re…well…super tiny!

Breeds include Toy or Teacup Poodles, Dachsund, Shih Tzu, Bichon Frise, Pugs, Beagles, Chihuahua, Maltese and King Charles Spaniels – and that’s not all. By the way, if you do own a Bichon Frise, you should get this Bichon trainer’s manual, it should come standard for every owner of this lovely breed. Try it, you and your Bichon will be happy with the results.  I’m still waiting for these guys to produce a Chihuahua owner’s guide for my family’s dog, the Bichon guide makes me wish we had bought a Bichon.

Buying teacup dog clothes isn’t merely for the looks or for the dog owner’s prerogative, though those are valid reasons – after all, it’s your dog! These smaller breeds actually aren’t adapted to adverse climate changes, so the colder months can really cause some trauma to these little guys and gals. The clothing makes up for the fact that they don’t produce much heat, and need the extra insulation. As I write this article, it’s December in a northern state of the U.S.A., so it’s a bit cold for our little Chihuahua. He loves his little sweater, let me tell you!

As the demand has risen for these smaller dog outfits, the clothing manufacturers have taken notice and are now producing entire lines of teacup dog clothes, though the teacup varieties of canine aren’t but a percentage of the overall population. Some of the better boutiques even give you the option of customizing your dog’s clothes, which is a nice touch.

For reasons of quality, we can’t recommend highly enough the selection available at Amazon. For example:

Here’s a mini-sized buyer’s guide to help you as you select your XXS dog clothes.

  • When you measure your dog, be sure you measure when your pet is standing up.
  • Measure the base of the neck, circumference of the neck, and the girth (around the chest). Just like with humans, you need the “shirt size.”
  • Know what your toy dog will be needing, since these clothes will perform a function beyond style.
  • Know how to accentuate your dog’s best physical characteristics – don’t make this a “What NOT to Wear!” for your pooch. :)
  • Make sure the teacup dog clothes you buy are of the best, most durable quality. Dogs are still dogs. If the price seems high, you may need to consider discount shops or used, second-hand clothes stores – yes, they exist for dogs, too.
  • Style your dog according to his or her personality. Other dogs will be jealous… ;)
  • Give your doggie time to adjust, so don’t go out and buy 10 outfits at once. Do more like a once a week outfit intro.
  • As your toy dog accepts his or her new digs, reward your pooch with a treat.
  • Just as you do with your jeans or other clothing, be sure you account for shrinkage in the wash before you buy.
  • The most vital pieces of dog couture include the coat, harness, and sweater. Use a harness vs. a leash with your mini-dog breeds, since it will help avoid harming their windpipe.
  • Most mini dog sites list the toy sizes as XXS dog clothes, just note your dog’s measurements to the manufacturer when you buy online (or make sure your dog fits).

When it’s cold and wet outside, you ought to be prepared to take care of your teacup dog breed with a hat, dog booties, and perhaps think about dog sweaters and coats. You can find these all in the vinyl or other waterproof material.  During the hotter seasons, you may consider some dog booties and perhaps a hat to keep the sun out of your dog’s eyes.  Colder months should see your dog dressed in teacup-sized fleece dog sweaters and coats, this will keep your little friend from shivering like our Toby tends to do when we’re behind in the wash cycle and he needs to go out undressed. He’s dressed for Mexico, not the northern border. Poor guy.

XXS dog clothes can be a bit on the pricey side, especially if you’re buying designer dog clothes or name-brand apparel. Just as in human fashion, the material and style will determine the cost, as well as the clout of the designer. Before you buy the really cheap stuff, put some thought into how hard your dog plays, and where your dog’s going to go dressed up. You may need to buckle-down and shill out some extra dough, but you may also find some decent wear on the discount rack from time to time.

It’s always fun to dress up your little dog in costumes and such, but only if they like to play along. Again, an incentive with praise and a treat would do nicely.
