Dog Booties
Dog Booties – These Booties Are Made For Walkin’
(Written by LKB)
Dog booties or dog boots are a must have item for every dog owner. Any dog from XXX-Small to X-Large can wear them so getting the right fit is important. To measure your dogs foot have your dog stand on a tape measure and measure the widest part of the foot. Another way is to measure from the small pads to the back edge of the large pads (not the nails unless they are extra long).
One of the best places to look for dog booties, you might not be surprised to learn, is PETCO:
Walking your dog on a sidewalk that is covered with snow, salt or ice can cause your dog discomfort and possible frostbite if snow, ice or even salt get stuck between your dogs paws, so wearing dog booties in cold weather would not only keep your dogs feet warm and dry but protect them.
If you are an extreme sports enthusiast and your dog is a participant in these sports with you, then whether you are a veteran sled dog racer, a recreational musher, or a skijorer, your dog will definitely appreciate the heavy duty, water and slip resistant, flexible, durable, boots that you can get as part of his protective equipment. Wearing dog boots can protect your dogs feet from rocks, broken glass, thorns and other abrasive terrain when you are hiking, hunting, or running with your dog.
Don’t think your dog doesn’t need boots if you live in a warm climate. Just as you wouldn’t like to walk barefoot on the burning sand at the beach or in the desert or on a hot sidewalk neither does your dog so be proactive and protect your dogs feet.
Hardwood floors can be slippery so wearing the boots with the non-skid soles for better traction can save your hardwood floor and help prevent injury to your dog. If your dog has been injured or cut his foot, a boot will help protect the wound, keep it clean, be more comfortable for the dog when walking and aid in a faster recovery.
And of course if your dog is a dress up darling there are plenty of designer “tennis shoes” and other booties to enhance your dog’s wardrobe. There are dog booties for the work dog, the sports dog and the lap dog. They provide protection for your dog outdoors and indoors. Find them at your local discount pet store or online.
The Benefits of Dog Booties
(Written by JB)
Usually when you think “dog booties”, you think of them belonging to a pampered pet who’s owner has a passion for fashion. Little did we know, that they could be so useful to our beloved pets. For instance, we already are aware they’re used as a fashion piece for our dogs. But, what other purposes do they meet? What about warmth, insulation, or how about protection from the heat? Let’s go discover what surprises lie ahead.
If you live in a snowy cold place like me, you’ve probably noticed that your dog isn’t too fond of having freezing paws. I have a chihuahua rat terrier, every time we take him out to go to the bathroom in the winter he comes back in licking his paws; shivering. One time he came back in yelping, hopping on his paws and alternating which ones he was standing on. We don’t want our pets to suffer, which is why getting booties for your dog can help protect against frozen paws. Protection against the cold is a common use, of booties. You’re guaranteed to find some water proof ones for your dog.
Here’s an example of a protective set of dog boots, available at PETCO, and you can click through to be taken to their online store:
They are the Body Glove Aqua Dog Boots – great for this time of year (it’s now Spring) as we head off into the Summer months. Many owners don’t take into account the damage that rocks and fishing hooks and the like can do to their pet’s feet – protect their paws with Body Glove’s line of gear.
Another brand you’ll find at PETCO is a line from PAWZ – which is a set of rubber booties that protect your dog’s paws from extreme hot or cold weather, and the rubber is thin enough so that your dog can still feel the ground, which is important for your pet to feel confident as he or she walks about. This is one example, and like the line from Body Glove, the boots come in various sizes and colors (I don’t know why they chose purple…but I didn’t take the picture!):
The sidewalks in the summer can get pretty darn hot. I used to live in California, and they would get so hot that you couldn’t walk outside just to check the mail without at least some flip flops. Sometimes the sidewalks are too hot even for our dogs to walk on, and they have natural shoes on! Why make them suffer? Dog booties are a protection against the heat for your pet. If you think about it, they’d actually be pretty handy because they’re preserving your pet’s paws. Which is nice for us, and nice for them. Especially, when they get into old age and they start to loose their traction on surfaces like hardwood floors, and other surfaces. If you think about it this way you’re helping prevent your pet from having issues when he/she gets old.
Booties are made for protection against harsh terrain, muddy terrains, stickers, goat heads (another form of stickers), hot surfaces, cold surfaces, snow, protecting against met and glass that might be on the sidewalk/streets.They are also made slide proof on all surfaces such as: wood surfaces, icy surfaces, wet surfaces, etc. Booties for your pet are also made with the grip and traction your pet needs. Depending on where you get them from, and what design, they make them comfortable for your dog. There’s also booties made specifically for when you want to take your dog for a walk at the park. In other words, for grassy terrain, sandy terrain (a walk on the beach maybe), and dirt terrains.
If your pup has an allergy to grass, dog booties are a protection against that. They make disposable ones, in case you only need them for a one-time or seasonal time use. What if you usually avoid grass because of your dog’s allergy to it, and you for some reason needed to cross a grassy field with him/her? You wouldn’t want to slip on these big old bulky boots on him/her.
If you carried disposable booties that would make things easy! An extra plus is you’d just throw them away once you’re done using them. Let’s say your dog doesn’t have an allergy to grass, different scenario. Maybe you don’t have grass in your backyard yet, and it just rained. You don’t want your pet to come inside with muddy paws, you would just slip on disposable booties then slip them off when you’re done. That makes things easy, then you can just deposit them in the trash can. That’s what I mean by a one-time/seasonal use.
You don’t want to necessarily spend all this money on dog booties if you only ever use them when your within muddy areas. Especially, if one day you’re going to get grass in your backyard. The disposable booties are really handy in that way. You won’t even have to clean the mud off of them, you’d just throw them away once you’re done. It’s easy, and mess free!
Does your dog have a habit of constantly licking its paws? Suppose there was something nasty on the sidewalk you and your pup just walked on? That nasty something could possibly be a harmful substance to your pet. If you had put booties on your dog then that would prevent her/him from licking his paws and possibly consuming harmful substances. it is possible that your dog will lick the booties instead of she/he’s paws though. That one is not a total guarantee.
If you are a hunter, and you bring your dog with you, sometimes it’s hard for man’s best friend to make those sharp turns they need to while hunting. There’s booties made specifically for hunting dogs. They benefits of them are being able to make those sharp, quick turns, water resistant booties, and skid resistant. They have similar booties for dog mushers. It’s hard for us to climb high snowy slopes without slipping, all the more so for dogs. So, if you’re a musher, you should invest in getting some booties for your dogs. The benefits of these type of booties is being able to climb snowy slopes, good grip, and water proof of course!
If you haven’t got around clipping your dog’s nails yet and you have to baby sit your nieces and nephews, don’t panic! You can’t find the clippers? No worries, just slip on your pup’s dog booties! That solves the problem until you can actually take the time to find those clippers, or until you can run to the store and buy another pair. A similar issue is if your dog tends to scratch strangers, or certain persons he/she doesn’t like. Does this mean you can’t ever have guests over? No. Does it mean you have to wait until you’ve trained him/her out of this scratching issue, to have guests over? No.
By all means, train him/her out of the scratching problem! But, in the meantime you don’t have to fore-go having friends over. That’s another scenario where dog booties comes in handy! While you’re in the process of training your dog out of his/hers bad scratching habit, you can still have friends over if you just slip your pet’s booties on. There are a lot of wonderful benefits of having booties for your dog, on handy. I highly recommend getting some!
